WPT GTO Trainer Hands of the Week: Expert Postflop Play From The Big Blind
This week were focused on a typical cash game spot where you are out of position against a tough player in Middle Position after calling their raise from the Big Blind.
There are a few flops where you could construct a leading range from the Big Blind in this spot, but for the vast majority of flops you can begin by checking to the preflop raiser. Checking is preferred as a default because the preflop aggressor will typically have an equity advantage.
Middle Positions range in this spot is significantly narrower than similar scenarios where youre facing a Button or Cutoff raise. As a general rule, you will be check-calling with all hands worth continuing in this spot, even hands as strong as sets. This passive line is preferred because of the overwhelming range advantage Middle Position typically has postflop. You will also be giving up more frequently than you would against wider ranges, folding hands as strong as ace high or under pairs to the flop, especially against larger flop bet sizings.
You will sometimes get to attack capped ranges from Middle Position on the turn and/or river, especially when you hold significant blockers. Most of your efforts in this scenario should be focused on getting to controlled showdowns and realizing your equity against a Middle Position player with a significant equity advantage.
Slow playing your big hands will help balance the times you are taking weaker hands to showdown and prevent the Middle Position player from just being able to fire across all streets with a wider range of hands to exploit that equity advantage.
